About Ali Craig
Alistair Craig co-runs Carse Hall Farm, a 240-hectare mixed dairy and arable business near Limavady, County Londonderry. A member of BASE Ireland, Alistair prioritises plant nutrition ahead of chemical interventions, producing home-grown silage, barley, and protein-rich crops to support his 270-head pedigree Holstein herd.
Alistair is a keen experimenter, developing his own on-farm bio-stimulants by fermenting plants like nettle and horsetail, and even fish guts! A gifted engineer he has modified machinery to apply these natural inputs effectively. His work with AHDB Cereals & Oilseeds Monitor Farm, has helped spotlight the value of practical, low-cost innovations to reduce input reliance and boost soil biology, while still commanding a six cut silage reigns and rotational cropping programme.
At Fields Good, Alistair will co-present “The Role of Soil Biology in Plant Nutrition” with no-till farmer Tom Tierney. Together, they’ll share how shifting focus to soil life changed their farming systems and offer a look at the DIY recipes and brewing techniques that are helping them unlock more from their soils, naturally.
